Vacuum Pump:

Cars With Vacuum Powered Wipers:

Electric wipers became available with EK models. Prior to this Holden cars had Wiper Motors that were powered by Engine Vacuum. When the Throttle was open and the Engine was turning slowly, insufficient vacuum existed to power the Wipers. An Engine driven Pump kept the Wipers working , (albeit slowly) until the revs increased.
