The New HD Holden

Produced February 1965 to March 1966.

After the highly successful EH Holden (1963 - 1964) the HD Holden was a bitter disappointment to General Motors Holden, often referred to jokingly by such names as "Horrible Design" or "Horrendous Disaster" the HD's new styling failed to catch the public eye as Holden had hoped.

Engine capacities continued over from the EH Holden with the 149 and popular 179 but a new factory performance option was added, the new X2 (179X2) added another 25 horsepower over the standard 179 engine and included aluminium alloy main bearings, headers, a better camshaft and the famous twin carburretors.

The HD Holden, even though not widely loved, included a great many advances over its predecessors, these included: An alternator as standard (previous models used generators), Optional disc brakes and ball joint suspension (a vast improvement over its predecessors king pin suspension and drum brake front end, these options however could only be chosen on the very late produced HD holdens of the series, as it was being produced on the HR series as default).

The HD was available with a 3 speed column manual or 2 speed Powerglide automatic, the 2 speed Powerglide automatic being a very popular improvement that lasted through many more models of Holden, it replaced the poorly performing 4 speed Hydramatic and was a direct descendant of the Chevrolet 2 speed Powerglide.

The HD Holden was released in the now standard types of Standard, Special, Premier and Commercial (Ute and Panel Van).

Standard - The Standard HD was easily recogniseable by it's single body colour and lack of exterior trim and badges.

Special - The Special was the most common type of HD, it included more exterior colours, an optional white roof and exterior badging ("Special")

Premier - The Premier was the top of the line. It included many features carried over from the EH Premier plus a console with lift up lid and optional vinyl roof covering.

The HD Holden was hastily replaced by the HR which was much more popular with the Australian public and returned sales to the level of the EH Holden. But the HD (mainly the HR) bought forward suspension improvements that continued well into the future and features that Holden returned to after the HR, like indicators outside the grill and wrap around tail lights (making the indicators visible from the side of the car and not just front and rear, HR utes and vans kept the tail lights and a small amount were also released with the front indicator setup from the HD).
