Submitted by oldscool on Thu, 06/12/2007 - 18:37.
SAGINAW 4 speed gearboxes only came out with 4 diffrent ratios as follows.
Saginaw 4 speed
(Number of ID Grooves) 1st 2nd 3rd 4th
(No Grooves) 2.84, 2.01, 1.35, 1.00
(1) 2.54, 1.80, 1.44, 1.00
(2) 3.11, 2.20, 1.47, 1.00
(3) 3.50, 2.47, 1.65, 1.00
The grooves are on the input shaft. As you can see in the picture the gearbox on the left has 1 groove making it a 2.54 ratio and the gearbox on the right has 3 grooves making it a 3.50 ratio. I hope this information helps some of you out there that did not know.
Saginaw Gearboxes. The unit on the left has 1 groove on the Input Shaft making it a 2.54 ratio. The gearbox on the right has 3 grooves in the Input Shaft making it a 3.50 ratio. The grooves bisect the Input Shaft at 90 degrees to the front/rear axis of each Gearbox where the Clutch Plate Spline is. Click to Enlargen. Photo by Oldscool.
