Rims:

Rims are another important component of any vehicle.  There are many different sizes and variations, and must match the Brand of tyre you prefer to use.  Specific types of Rims apply to each vehicle, and improper tyre size on a Rim can increase or decrease your Speedomoter reading considerably,  as well as affecting the Handling and Braking capabilities of the vehicle.There are many different sizes of Rims, ranging from a 13in diameter, all the way up to an 18in diameter.  Width can also vary greatly, as the Stock 'H' series Holden rim was 5.5in wide, a 4X4 rim can anywhere up to 12in wide.

Stock Rims:

These Rims are the rims fitted by the factory when the vehicle was in production.    The Stock'H' Series Holden Rim was made of Steel and measured 5.5in(137.5mm) wide.  Different models of Holdens produced a number of different size Rims measuring between 13in and 15in in Diameter.  

Magnesium Rims:

More commonly refered to as Mags, actually comprise of an Aluminium Steel alloy.  Commonly also referred to as "Chromies" and are commonly found on Muscle Cars of the 70's and 80's period.

Alloy Rims:

Alloy rims can also be a Stock Factory rim, as well as a rim put on post production.  Commonly more lighter than Mags and Steel Rims, and actually comprise of a Magnesium Alloy.  These types of Rims are commonly seen on late modern vehicles, such as late model Holden Commodores.

Balancing Rims:

A Rim and Tyre must be balanced before being put onto a vehicle.  There are several reasons for this.  Firstly, an incorrectly balanced wheel will cause vibrations within the vehicle.  Secondly, Unbalanced wheels cause an uneven wear pattern to occur on the Tyre, which will greatly reduce the tyres life. 

Damaged Rims:

Many different things can cause damage to your rims.  Curb damage is by far the most common.  This occurs when the Vehicle impacts against the curb, and can either leave a scratch or scrape, or sufficiently worse.  Other types of damage that can occur include Cracking of the internal surfaces.  When this occurs, the Cracked Rim will be unable to hold Tyre Pressure, and a new Rim will be required.

 Any damage to a Rim should be investigated immediately, as any impact to the Rim can also damage other vital components of the vehicle, such as the Control and Steering Arms, Braking Systems, and Suspension.  Any damage to these areas will pose a significant risk to the safety of the vehicle.
