==Power Steering:==

===Operation:===An Engine driven Oil Pump provides Oil Pressure to the Steering Box. The Pump is usually driven by a Belt. The Steering Box directs Oil to an Hydraulic Ram inside the Rack and Pinion Casing or parallel to the Track Rod on Ackerman Steering to make steering easier for the Driver.

===Operating Observation:===Avoid holding full lock since this will place excessive strain on the system. This can be a cause of Leaks and the time a Leak will most likely appear.

===Oil:===Automatic Transmission Fluid is usually used, although some Oil Companies make a product specifically for Power Steering.

===Oil Level:===The Oil Level should be checked periodically since loss of Oil can lead to loss of directional control. The Reservoir is labelled Full Cold and Full Hot.

===Belt Ension:===Belt Tension on these is usually set loose (compared to the V Belt driven Alternators or Water Pumps) to minimise Bearing wear inside the Pump.

===Troubleshooting:===

====Failing Pump:====When the Power Steering Pump is failing it may make a grumbling noise. This should be investigated immediately.

====Oil Loss:====Any Oil loss should be investigated immediately. Holding Full Lock can cause Oil Leaks because constant pressure is applied to the Ram. The Ram should only see enough pressure to position the Front Wheels. Once in position the Pressure should be removed.

On Rack and Pinion Cars a Leak can appear in the Centre of the Rack at the supply/return Connection. THis is buried between the Sump and the Crossmember and be difficult to identify. Unbolting the Rack and moving it rearward will allow access to check that the Connection is secure.
