Generator to Alternator Conversion:

Replacing the Generator on a Grey Motor 12 Volt Holden with an Alternator is an easy and very worthwhile conversion. The same is true for an EH Holden since they were the last Holden to come standard with Generators. 12 Volt Grey Motor Holdens are FE FC FB EK EJ. Red Six Holdens are EH HD HR HK HT HG HQ HJ HX HZ VB LC LJ LH LX UC.

B connects directly to the Battery. F connects to the small Field connector on the Generator. The thick wire connected to the D terminal connects to the large D output connector on the Generator and is the Generator output. Click to Enlargen. Photo by Daves59.

Sonic Injection make a Bracket that allows an Alternator tp bolt directly onto a Grey Motor. Note that an Alternator is a 12 volt device. There are no cost effective 6 volt Alternators.

Advantages:

These days Alternators are more reliable, lighter, easier to find, cheaper, have higher output and make the Battery last longer than Generators because they are more likely to keep the Battery fully charged and prevent Sulphating.  The Rear Bearing found in the Generator of an Old Holden needed periodic oiling which often didn't happen. The lack of Oil was a major cause of Generator failure. Since Alternators use pre-greased Ball Bearings at both ends they are a lot less likely to fail.

Connections:

  D =  Dynamo F = Field   F = DF D = D+   DF = Dynamo Field   D+ = Dynamo +ve   B = B+ = Battery +ve   B = Battery +ve

Info posted by Q-ball Nov 18 2006:
"...Altered an old Red motor Alt. bracket to bolt to the Genny. mounting points...would you belive the shafts are the same size between the Alt. & Gen.!!..so just used the old "B" section pulley with a washer behind it..DONE!!
Next change all globes (dash,tail etc) to 12v, fitted a head light relay & wacked in a couple of QH insert lights...so far have only bought the relay..the rest has been in the shed!
The headlight conversion was made a little easier by using the headlight harness's from an FJ that had been converted to (6v)sealed beams...these had the right plugs.
Next..fuel gauge..it is likely that the gauge & sender would have handled 12 volts..BUT..a mate at the local hobby store built me a small regulator..12 volts in, 6 out..the size of a .50 cent coin, over a cup of coffee for $10.
Could have changed the starter, but left it...winds over REAL well.

Alternaor Mounting Bracket:

Sonic Injection make a Bracket that will allow an Alternator to Bolt straight onto a Grey Motor.

Wiring Conversion:

The Red B+ Wire on the Generator must be rated to carry the rated current of the Alternator in every case i.e an 85 Amp Alternator must have at least 85 Amp Cable.
