Original Direct Drive Starter:

The original Starters used on 12 Volt Holdens were Direct Drive meaning that the Armature and Pinion Gear were directly connected. While Direct Drive simplified manufacturing it increased the unit's size and weight while reducing its efficiency.

Replacement Starter:

The Bosch Hi Torque Starter is a direct replacement for the earlier Direct Drive Starters and is smaller and lighter.By using a Planetary Gearset to gear down the Pinion Gear, the load on the Armature is reduced meaning less Battery Current is needed to rotate the Armature. As a result of the increase in efficiency, the Armature and field are made smaller which also reduces the weight.Being smaller the unit fits behind Extractors and is easier to replace. The Bosch Hi Torque Starter uses the original Starter Bolts for mounting but has Metric Studs and Nuts on the Solenoid. A 12 mm Spanner fits the Starter Tap Nut.
