This Bedford 214 Rocker Gear had a bent Pushrod. " ... Appears some one had attempted to straighten it but not done a very good job. As the push rod spun it had very little contact with the rocker at some times and caused this wear I the right hand rocker". Photo and info by fjwb. Click to Enlargen.

Bedford Valve Train Rattle:

The info is relevant to grey motors as well as the Bedford 214 Engine mentioned in the first photo.

Mid RPM Range Rattle

The Bedford had a 'rattle' in the mid range that did sound a bit like piston slap. After having the motor apart for some new rings I was fairly confident it wasn't the problem. It did sound more like a valve train issue. I was told it had a bent push rod at some point in time and the truck came with a spare push rod. I ran the engine with the rocker cover off and could see an issue with the no. 6 inlet. Appears some one had attempted to straighten it but not done a very good job. As the push rod spun it had very little contact with the rocker at some times and caused this wear I the right hand rocker. I put the spare rod in and the noise is gone. End of submission by fjwb.
